Superintendent
Dear Brooklyn City Schools Students, Families, Staff and School Community,
I hope this message finds you having a great start to the 24/25 school year. I write to you today to share some positive news about the academic progress of our school district.
The Ohio Department of Education recently released the results of school district performance on the State Report Card for the 2023-2024 school year. The state’s Local Report Card gives our community a snapshot of the progress made by the Brooklyn City Schools in raising achievement and academic growth from the previous school year. As a result, schools and districts now receive star ratings for five components instead of traditional letter grades.
Recently, we received our State Report Card, and I am delighted to inform you that our school has achieved an overall district rating of 4 Stars (exceeds state standards in academic achievement). These results reflect the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our entire school community - from our incredible students and their families to our talented educators and staff members.
While the numbers on the report card are certainly something to be proud of, I want to emphasize that “our story” lies in the collective effort and collaboration that defines our school district each and every day. While important, our report card results shared by the Ohio Department of Education provides a “limited snapshot” of academic achievement and growth assessment data. Nonetheless, we are grateful for the overall progress our district has made and will continue to use all assessment data and programming results to make improvements in our academic offerings. A summary of the results is featured below and can also be viewed on the Ohio Department of Education website.
Highlights from this year’s Local State Report Card include:
★ 4-Star Rating: The District, for the second year in a row, received an Overall Rating of 4-Stars on the 2023-24 Ohio Department of Education State Report Card. This achievement signifies that we continue to “exceed state standards” as a school district!
★ High Graduation Rate: A 95.5% 4-Year Graduation Rate and a 96.0% 5-Year Graduation Rate; with a combined graduation rate of 95.7 % for the 23-24 school year.
★ Early Literacy Gains: Students in Kindergarten through third grade continue to make substantial gains in reading proficiency; over a 3-year period our students went from 59.5% to 76.8% in this early literacy component.
★ Reduced Chronic Absenteeism: The efforts of our dedicated teachers and staff have helped to reduce the percentage of students who are chronically absent from school.
★ Achievement Progress: The District has seen a moderate increase in 11 state indicators from the previous school year on standardized Ohio State Tests and End of Course Exams.
★ Career Readiness: 38% of our Graduating Seniors received an Industry-Recognized Credential prior to graduating from Brooklyn High School!
★ College Readiness: 57% of our high school students earned a 3+ or higher on Advanced Placement Exams, earning them college credit prior to entering a 2 or 4-year university; 10.6% of our students participated in the dual enrollment College Credit Plus program, earning college credit while attending Brooklyn High School!
I want to thank the Board of Education, faculty, classified staff, administrators and families for the continued support in advancing the achievement and growth of our students. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions!
Sincerely,
